Huawei exports R&D from the US, will build a 5G factory in Europe

Huawei plans to move its R&D center from the US to Canada, as well as start manufacturing mobile network equipment outside of China. In particular, the company intends to build a new facility in Europe for 5G equipment, the Canadian edition of Globes and Post reported, citing Huawei founder Ren Renfey.

By opening operations outside of China, Huawei’s management expects to ease concerns about the safety of its products, prompted by US authorities’ statements. Huawei firmly rejects Washington’s accusations that the company’s 5G technology could be used for espionage in favor of the Beijing government.

Reuters, meanwhile, said, citing informed sources, that the US government is considering tightening sanctions on Huawei, because despite measures taken by Washington, the external supply of the component to the Chinese company has not stopped.

Since May this year. The U.S. Department of Commerce has blacklisted Huawei, and the company has virtually lost the opportunity to buy U.S. hardware and software without Washington’s special approval.

However, many key component suppliers for Huawei devices do not apply the declared limitations in their current form. In this regard, the US Presidential Administration is considering a possible extension of sanctions. The new rules would block Huawei from doing more than foreign deliveries.

In particular, this is an extension of the restriction to standard chips for mobile phones manufactured abroad using technology, software or components of American origin.

It is unclear how close Washington is to his decision to change the rule and whether it will apply gradually or suddenly. Stricter sanctions are being discussed, though in November the White House extended Huawei’s provisional license to work with U.S. companies and allowed Microsoft to ship software to a Chinese company.

Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing experts, that Huawei could manufacture smartphones without US components, replacing them with components from other sources. In a media interview, Huawei Chief Information Officer John Suffolk says all 5G products are now US-independent.
