Facebook is developing its own operating system. The world’s largest social network wants to create a competitor for Android, according to The Information, citing sources from a US company.
Currently, little details are known about the project. The development was entrusted to a team led by Mark Lukovski, a former Microsoft engineer who was involved in the creation of Windows NT.
They say developers have been writing Facebook OS since the beginning. The new branch is headquartered in Burlingham, north of the company’s headquarters. The 6500-square-foot office space accommodates nearly 4,000 employees.
“We really want to make sure the next-generation solutions are completely ours,” said Andrew Bosworth, head of hardware development at Facebook, who confirms that the company is creating its own OS. “We don’t believe we can trust the market or our competitors, so we (the operating system) will do it ourselves.”
Facebook will bring all or almost all of its devices to its own platform, including the Oculus Go VR headset, the Oculus Quest virtual reality helmet coming out in 2018, and the Portal Video Chat smart screen.
