El Capitan to Offer High-Level Productivity Cray to Build Exascale Supercomputer for Nuclear Resources Research. The US company Cray will receive $ 600 million to build the world’s fastest supercomputer. The machine will only be used for tasks related to U.S. nuclear sources, ZDNet said.

Cray has signed a contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to build the powerful El Capitan supercomputer. The National Nuclear Safety Administration (NNSA) and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory will also participate in the project.

El Capitan emerges as the first former skeleton owned by the NNSA (Floating Point 10 Level 18 Operations per second). It will be used exclusively for nuclear tasks. The supercomputer will step into the new Cray Shasta architecture, ClusterStor storage and Slingshot connectivity technology.

Cray is one of the leading players in the field of supercomputers. The company’s systems rank in three of the top ten places in the list of best-performing supercomputers in the world. In May this year, HPE announced it would acquire Cray for a sum of $ 1.3 billion.
