An international team of scientists has discovered that neural networks can be used to look for DNA damage caused by ultraviolet radiation. The development is the job of scientists at Tomsk Polytechnic and their colleagues at the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague.

According to the researchers, it is not completely clear today how exactly UV rays damage the structure of DNA. However, it is known that the effect of UV radiation can increase the risk of cancer.

In the new experiment, scientists took oligonucleotides with different arrays and irradiated them with ultraviolet light for different periods. Changes in DNA structure were analyzed by Raman spectrometer. Later, spectra were used to train neural networks.

“Not only do neural networks detect damage, they very effectively predict changes in the structure of DNA caused by UV radiation. In addition, changes that are invisible using traditional methods with high precision have been identified by neural network in combination with Raman spectroscopy with an improved surface,” one of the authors of the development.
