Cheaper than trucks and much more flexible 7-tonne Valtin tractors that independently purify snow at the airport in Finland. Robot vacuum cleaners and mowers are already a reality, but can the same idea be attached to a 7-ton machine that cleans snow trail?

To prove that this is possible, Valtra and Nokian Tires co-operate with three other Finnish companies at the airport north of the European Union. Two Valtra T254 Versa tractors equipped with Nokian Hakkapeliitta TRI tires, each of which pulled a 4.5 m wide fan, independently cleaned the Ivalo airport in Lapland, in March.

The tractor specialist Valtra has been working on autonomous tractors for several years now. Together with Nokian Tires, the two companies set a record-breaking snowmobile record in 2018 with the autonomous T254 Versu equipped with Nokian Hakkapeliitta TRI tires.

In the “Snow Track” project, the Valtra SmartTouch features – such as automatic precision centimeter control and ISOBUS – controller – are the basis for the technology needed to control pre-set routes.

The tractor Valtra T254 Versu is equipped with Nokian Hakkapeliitta TRI tires. Tractors are an interesting alternative to airfields where work widths of 4.5 meters are sufficient.

They are considerably cheaper than trucks and are much more flexible. Valtra and Vammas fans are equipped with Neste MY renewable diesel fuel, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions by about 90% compared to fossil diesel, says Runway Snowbot project participants.
