The European Commission announced a recent ambitious project to create its own European supercomputer for future HPC platforms in data centers, scientific calculations, traffic and other sectors.

The open architecture of RISC-V was chosen as the basis for a supercomputer, and the processor and platform developed with the European Processor Initiative (EPI) consortium with 26 participants – companies and research organizations, Atos, CEA, Barcelona Supercomputing Center, ETH Zürich, BMW and others.

EPI has already made the first important step in implementing the European Supercomputer project. Data Center Dynamics reports that the European Commission presented the first architectural design of the RISC-V processor for the Pan-European supercomputer. The Rhea EP271x processor is built on RISC-V architecture with embedded FPGA matrix. It is not specified whether the processor has ARM cores, as were the original plans.

The mass production of the Rhea EP271x is likely to start in 2020, and the first exemplary systems with this processor are expected in 2021. European supercomputers with more than 1 exaffopa output will be released in 2022 or 2023. EPI develops a whole series of RISC-V base processors – from a small automotive vehicle to super-powerful models of artificial intelligence and supercomputers.

The consortium is also working on creating software and infrastructure ecosystems, PCIe adapters, blade servers, and HPC knives. At the same time, Europe will continue to leverage HPC technology and platforms.

In 2020, based on imported platforms, two supercomputers will be created with output at the level of the hexaflase and two or three systems of several petaflops.

Later, in 2022 or 2023, the EU plans to create two more exaggerated supercomputers, one of which will be on the European platform. By 2027, if quantum calculations were tailored to work in the HPC sphere, an exaggerated supercomputer could appear in Europe.
