Bulgarian astronomers contribute to acquiring new knowledge of some of the most interesting objects in the universe was revealed by the launch of successful projects of the Institute for Astronomy of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences by the Fund for Scientific Research.

Within the project “Mass Transfer and Angular Momentum in Astrophysics” led by Prof. With Evangel Semkov, the research team explored a wide range of phenomena related to mass and momentum transmission in various systems of cosmic objects starting from the Sun and the Solar System through the stars of our galaxy, the Milky Way, to our most distant objects – mysterious quasars and blazers.

The aim of the research is to contribute to acquiring new knowledge of the universe, star-forming processes, star and planetary systems, galaxies and quasars, and their evolution. Research methods include the acquisition and processing of spectral and photometric observations mainly with telescopes and observation devices of the National Astronomical Observatory Rozhen (NAO).

The results of the project led to the preservation of two doctoral theses and were published in many prestigious journals. Among them, it is a surprising discovery that in the universe, a much larger number of stars with masses are born more than 30 times the mass of the Sun than previously thought.

The study was published in the prestigious scientific journal Science and is of great importance for understanding the evolution of the stars. Another great discovery is related to an explanation of the behavior of one of the most powerful active galactic cores in the universe, close to the CTA102.

By the end of 2016, for a few days, he became the brightest similar subject in history. Explanation of its behavior is enabled by a large number of observational data and analysis, with the active participation of Bulgarian astronomers, supported by this project, funded by NSF.

The study is important for understanding physical processes in active galactic nuclei and is published in Nature.
