Digital interactive books have many advantages over ordinary books when it comes to children’s education, according to a recent study by psychologist Eric Thiesen of Carnegie Mellon University.

The researcher finds that children have a better memory of reading content if they become familiar with animated interactive content as they learn about the material. He is convinced that animations associated with verbal interaction greatly increase reading performance.

During the experiment, 30 children between the ages of 3 and 5 recounted adult reading from a regular book as well as a digital one, where each page was supplemented with interactive animation. The children were asked what they could think of. Children who interacted with the digital book were found to have a 15-20% better reading experience.

The highest memory rating was achieved when there were animations in the digital book that answered the child’s questions.
