Screenshots are an important skill that everyone should master, according to Digital Trends. So the media was tasked with explaining in detail how this could be done on a Windows computer.
If you are planning to take a screenshot of your Windows PC, you should know that there are many ways to achieve your goal. Options below include using a standard “Print Screen” key, sending screenshots to OneDrive, and more. The color is used as a tool, but you can edit it with any other third-party tool.
Step 1: Capture the image
Windows provides six methods for capturing a desktop image. Three are based on the Print Screen (PrtScn) button, while the other three are based on the Win button. Here is a breakdown of the six screen capture commands:
– Print Screen (PrtScn) – Captures full screen. If you have more than one display, this option captures everything displayed on all connected displays as one image. By default, this method does not save the image as a file, but sends the captured image to the clipboard.
– Alt + Print Screen – Captures a single window. Before pressing these two buttons, check the destination window, such as a document or browser. By default, this method does not save the image as a file, but sends it to the clipboard.
– Win + Screen Screen – Captures full screen. The difference here is that Windows saves the image as a file. By default, it is sent to C:> Users (your name)> Screenshots and pictures on your computer.
– Win + Shift + S – Captures the screen with the built-in Snip & Sketch tool. The screen is dimmed and four shooting options are provided: rectangular, freeform, window and full screen. This tool does not save the images as a file, but simply sends them to the clipboard.
Win + G – Opens the game bar. Click the on-screen button and this tool saves the default image in C:> Users (your name)> VideosCaptures. To use this tool, make sure that the screen capture feature of the game bar is included in Settings> Games> Names.
Win + Alt + Print Screen – Captures full screen. This command saves the default image in C: UsersVideosCaptures.
In some cases, the screen blinks or suffocates to inform you that Windows has taken over your screen. If that doesn’t happen, open File Explorer and go to the default locations to see if Windows has saved your image.
If you use OneDrive, you can save thumbnails from the cloud screen so that they are accessible from any device. However, this is not done by default. Therefore, you need to right-click the cloud icon next to the system clock and click Settings in the drop-down menu. Then click on the “Backup” tab in the open window and check the box under “Screenshots”.
In this case, you can press the first three commands on the print screen to automatically save images to OneDrive. You won’t see the screen flicker or dark – you’ll be notified instead. Be sure to sync the “Screenshots” folder if you want to access the images on your computer.
Finally, if you have a Dropbox account, picture images can be automatically uploaded to the “Screenshots” folder in your cloud storage.
Step 2: Light color
If you used a method that locally saves your screen as a file, you can find and view the image using the Photos app. If everything looks great, you can move it, email it, upload it to the cloud, etc. However, if you need to edit the image, you can use one of the three built-in tools: Paint, Paint 3D and Photos.
Compared to Paint and Paint 3D, Microsoft’s latest application, Photos is a bit limited. You can rotate and crop images, resize them, apply filters, adjust colors, remove red eyes and more. You cannot draw your own pictures, nor can you create a picture from scratch and save it from the clipboard.
For the purposes of this guide, the older Paint program is used because it is known and trusted. You won’t find it by default in the Start menu. So type Paint in the taskbar search box and click on the result.
Color may also be available when you right-click on the image. When the menu appears, hover over the “Open With” option to see the Color in the list, as shown below.
In addition, you can find the mspaint.exe program in the C: WindowsSystem32 directory. Right-click the file and select “Start Pin” from the drop-down menu.
Step 3: Place the screenshot in Paint
You will need this step if you are using a screenshot method that sends your photos to the clipboard. In light color, click the Insert button located in the upper left corner. You can also press the Ctrl + V keys on the keyboard to set the image to blank color.
Then you can crop, draw, create shapes, add text and much more. If you want to add stickers, 3D shapes, effects and more, click the 3D color button on the right side of the toolbar.
Step 4: Save the screenshot
This step applies to all methods. When you’re done editing the image, click on the “File” option in the top left corner, then select Save As. This option can be expanded and you can choose from four file formats – PNG, JPEG, BMP and GIF – along with the “Other formats” option, which allows you to save your image as a TIFF or HEIC file.
No matter which format you choose, a popup will pop up. Enter a filename and from the drop down menu select the desired file format. You can also select a destination if you do not want to save the photo to the specified location.
When done, click on the gray “Save” in the lower right corner.
Alternative ways
The best alternative methods are to use the built-in Snap tools and the Snip and Sketch tool. To use the first tool, enter the Snipping tool in the taskbar search box, and select the resulting application.
You can access Snip & Sketch from the Start menu or by pressing “Win + Shift + S”.
Of course, there are more options for capturing screenshots. They are available from third-party tools such as LightShot and the GNU or GIMP image manipulation software.
