European companies have been subjected to a powerful cyber-attack

German companies say attack from China’s Largest Company in Europe attacking hackers likely to support China. German companies BASF, Siemens and Henkel, along with several other big names from various industries, have become cyberattack victims.

The most likely “culprit” is a Chinese group, Reuters reported. The hackers used malicious software called Winnti, which allows them to gain remote access to the victim’s computer network, reveals ARD. The software code analysis shows which companies are targeting the attack group, probably working for the Chinese government.

Together with German companies, hackers attacked Roche’s doctors, a Marriott hotel group, Lion Air, Sumitomo conglomerate, and the Shin-Ets chemical group. Siemens industrial conglomerate, Henkel shampoo manufacturer and Swiss pharmaceutical group Roche confirmed that they were affected by Winnt.

BASF and Covestro also confirm that they are attacked. All companies ensure that there is no lost sensitive information, but none of them commented on whether the cyber-attack was the work of Chinese hackers, as suggested in the German media.
